Cherry's Wrapping Up

Cherry's Wrapping Up

Cherry's Wrapping Up. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. The long, cool spring weather had cherry growers across the NW concerned but according to NW Cherries, BJ Thurlby it looks like this season will end on a good note. THURLBY: Well we're winding down but we're still shipping about 150-thousand boxes a day. We're approaching 13.5 million boxes. There were some people who really thought this crop was going to come in short around 10-million and I'm glad because our estimate was, by the first of June, we were thinking it was 13-million,; 13.5 million so it looks like our estimate ended up being what we considered closer than we originally thought it was. The market has held up pretty well this year compared to last year and prices have been good although as the volume drops Thurlby is seeing a price drop as well. Due to the spring weather size was thought to be an issue. THURLBY: We've had 70% 10.5 row and larger which is a record so the overall size of this crop in terms of each cherry size has been outstanding. Growers have done a great job. I think it's going to go down in the annals as a good year. You know every grower wishes it was better and I've never seen a year when they don't but at the same time overall when you compare the results in 2010 versus 2009 I think we're all much happier and much better off. That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
