Crop insurance sales closing dates for 2011

Washington Ag Today July 21, 2010 In just over a month a federal crop insurance sales closing date is coming for northwest farmers for some 2011 crop year crops. Jo Lynne Seufer with the regional office of USDA’s Risk Management Agency says August 31st is one deadline.

Seufer: “Which is the final date for producers of fall planted onions, that‘s Umatilla and Walla Walla counties. And 2011 planted canola and rapeseed can get their crop insurance.”

Seufer says there has been an expansion for the canola coverage in Washington.

Seufer: “And the canola will now be in Douglas and Okanogan counties, w which prior to this it has not been.”

After August 31st the next big sales closing date is September 30th. That covers numerous crops, most notably wheat, which for the 2011 crop year has that new combo policy.

Farmers and Ranchers in the Hangmen Creek watershed near Spokane are being encouraged to apply for federal money that has become available to install water quality conservation measures. The money can be used for fencing cattle out of the creek, for building watering facilities for livestock away from the creek and for starting direct seeding. You can contact the Spokane County Conservation District or the NRCS.
