Wheat harvest underway in PNW

Farm and Ranch July 20, 2010  The U.S. winter wheat harvest continues to progress across the country, now including the Pacific Northwest. USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey has the latest numbers from across the country.

Rippey: “As of July 18th we see 71% of the 2009-10 winter wheat crop harvested. That is just slightly behind the five year average of 74% but it is ahead of last year‘s pace of 69%. We see of course as always a wide contrast in progress. Harvest not underway yet in Idaho and Montana. Just one percent in Washington state but harvest is complete or 99% complete in the following states, in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio.”

In the Northwest the winter wheat harvest is the most advanced in Oregon with eight percent of the crop cut but that compares to 20 percent at this time last year and 22 percent for the five year average.

USDA’s Rippey updates the development of the U.S. spring wheat crop.

Rippey: “Most the crop now headed out, 87%. Five year average 91%. And even in the areas that had been very delayed like Montana now we see almost two-thirds of the crop headed, 65% versus the five year average of 86%.”

Washington’ spring wheat is 99 percent headed while Idaho at 66 percent headed is 21 points behind the five year average for now. As for the condition of U.S. spring wheat Rippey says;

Rippey: “Spring wheat condition remains very good across the board, 82% good to excellent. Down one point from last week but better than last year‘s number of 73% at this time.”
