Fruit Snapshot Part 2

Fruit Snapshot Part 2. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. The 2010 cherry crop is pretty much in the history books and according to Jeff Fagg, Vice President of Agribusiness for NW Farm Credit Services things turned out pretty well. FAGG: We had the bud set and potential for the mega-large 120 million box crop that certainly could have put some pressure on pricing so we dodged that bullet it would appear. But now we have to work hard to make sure that growers can produce and peak on large enough sizes that profitability can be retained. Turning attention to the upcoming apple crop, he says that size could remain an issue. FAGG: The biggest issue with the apple crop and the decrease in the size profile is that as we've moved forward into the new retailer structure the demand from the retailers is for primarily for 2 or 3 of the larger sizes of the apples that they now like to stock and obviously with some of this cool weather it could put some pressure on the availability of those target sizes. NW Farm Credit Services does a number of individual crop snapshots every quarter to help the industry gauge how things are progressing. The next report should be out at the end of September.
