Soft White Wheat
Crop producers…particularly you wheat farmers, there’s a particular wheat you might be interested in hearing about. I’m David Sparks and I’ll be right back with a thought. Talking the other day with Steve Mercer, Director of Communications for the U.S. Wheat Association and we got into Idaho specifically: “Out of Idaho it’s important to consider that soft white wheat has been very attractive this year. Export sales are actually above where they were last year at this time. There are a lot of reasons for that but prices are more attractive on soft wheat. Australia which is a competitor for soft white, they had a pretty decent year production wise and they’ve exported a lot but their supply isn’t as strong as it could be. Also there’s a partnership between the state commissions and the Pacific Northwest and U.S. Wheat, we’ve been trying to build new markets in Latin America especially for noodle production and cookies and crackers and that has made soft white more attractive.”
