Pear Season Off To A Good Start

Pear Season Off To A Good Start. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. Spring is coming on strong and early this year in the Pacific NW. Kevin Moffitt with Pear Bureau Northwest. MOFFITT: Very early to tell. Very early to say but what I'm hearing is definitely early. Potentially, I've heard, 10 to 14 days early in terms of how things are advancing. I think that depends on which region we're in here. You know we're talking Medford, Oregon all the way up to the Okanogan so a lot of different climate areas. Moffitt says that strangely California is running pretty close to a normal schedule and that might cause some minor hitch with NW production. MOFFITT: If they're on time, say early July harvest and we're early which could push us into late July or so we're going to have more opportunity to be competing with them on the marketplace. And of course being this early could potentially extend the frost season which could cost producers more. The recent earthquake in Chile is bringing some uncertainty to the fruit market but perhaps some opportunities as well. MOFFITT: It's sad to say but often true that one persons disaster can open up opportunities for other people. We don't like to see that happen but we're certainly going to be able to sell pears into areas of the world or in the U.S. that might have a hole from the Chilean fruit exports. That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
