They are cute, fuzzy, expensive  and oh so sweet, the perfect Christmas gift, hey I wonder why we haven’t seen them in the Neiman Marcus catalog? If you want a Christmas gift that will wow that special cowgirl on your list, provide endless hours of enjoyment, keep your fence row clear and be artistic enough to stop traffic consider a longhorn, that’s right the iconic breed of cattle are friendly, hardy and stunning with horns that can be 5 feet across or more. Longhorns were Spanish cattle that rode to the New World with Christopher Columbus, they got off the ship and flourished in herds from Mexico to Texas and eventually became the foundation for our cattle industry. But the industry changed favoring a European style cow and the wild  longhorn was headed for extinction until that is , they found their new place in western society as an upscale lawn ornament when more and more urbanites moved to the country on gentleman farms. Today more than 330,000 longhorns grace pastures in every state even Alaska and each  year enthusiast gather in Fort Worth at the Will Rogers Coliseum to compare horn sizes. Unlike other cattle the majority of longhorns end up as pets,  they are not sold by the pound rather  by the “inch”  of horn size and by their bling, meaning  flashy  colors and kind eyes.  So if you want to sit on your porch and watch an icon of the west  graze peacefully in your pasture put a long on that  Christmas list.
