That's Not Hippy
More of this local farmer to local table talk. This ain’t hippy talk, man, this is a real opportunity. In Idaho, we have done so many stories on the local food movement…where consumers are increasingly demanding to know where their food is coming from and, even more demanding, who is growing their food. The Capital City Market buzzes every Saturday through the summer with over 16,000 people looking for locally grown goods. OK! I admit, there’s a bit of a “Hey Man, that’s Cool…that is like so organic and Rad!” feeling to all this but you can’t stop people from doing what they want to do. So rather than try to beat ‘em, why not join ‘em. You know who also thinks this way??? U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack Speaking to National Farmers Union members: “We want to create a better link. We want to create a better opportunity for local consumption and local production to be linked together. Why? Because we think there are a lot of institutional purchasers out there, schools, hospitals, prisons, colleges that would benefit by a local supply of food being supplied to them on a consistent basis, we think this would help family farms and small producers be able to have additional markets.” That didn’t come from commune, that’s capitalism at its best.
