Grain Elevator Accident

Grain Elevator Accident

It’s  8 o’clock…it’s 12’o’clock, it’s whatever o’clock. Do you know where your kids are? Better be mindful of that. I’m David Sparks…tell you why in a minute.  Children living in rural areas are at greater risk of unintentional injury-related death than children living in urban areas.  Each year 70 children ages 14 and under die from injuries occurring on a farm. Children account for almost 20 percent of all agricultural injury fatalities and hospitalizations.  “We usually lose at least one child a season to a farm or rural related accident. Well if we can keep one kid from injury or preventing a death, then we’ve done our job.”  That’s Safe Kids Director Page Geske who maintains that Farm kids come face to face with agriculture all the time and should be aware of the risks associated with the industry.

Well wouldn’t you just know it…an accident just happened to a 13 year old girl in Caldwell and she suffered an ankle and potential spinal injury after recently falling about 15 to 20 feet in an abandoned Caldwell grain elevator. Thank Goodness she wasn’t killed but this type of tragedy reminds us all that we have to be vigilant about kids and danger lurking in all kinds of rural and farm settings.
