Good Looking Pear Crop

Good Looking Pear Crop

Good Looking Pear Crop. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

Along with the apple crop that is coming off the trees in record numbers Kevin Moffitt, Executive Director of Pear Bureau Northwest says this year will be a good one for pears as well.

MOFFITT: The crop is just about off the trees and we’re looking at a very large, clean, beautiful pear crop this year. Sizing - when you have a very large crop, this will be a record crop for us, quite often that means the size of the fruit is going to be small, well this year that isn’t going to be the case. All growing conditions were very positive this season and it turned out to be a beautiful crop and a very large crop.

Of course just getting the crop off the tree is only half the battle in the fruit industry.

MOFFITT: It’s good but we’re going to have our hands full and we just have to get out there and get very aggressive with the promotion and the retailers are already on board with a lot of ads and we’re getting a lot of ads with multi pears, multi varieties at the same price.

Moffitt says that so far the price is holding – but…

MOFFITT: We can’t expect the same kind of pricing we had last year with a crop that last year was probably 2 million boxes shorter than what we have this year. With that kind of extra volume unfortunately the price won’t be quite as good as we saw but I expect it to be in a decent range and expect the growers to have another good year anyway.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
