Growing Wine Industry

Growing Wine Industry. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

If you like to get out on the weekends and enjoy a good glass of wine this is the prime time of the year for you as just about everywhere you look there are wine crush festivals going on. Robin Pollard, Executive Director of the Washington Wine Commission says the wine industry has lot to offer especially to someone who has never been to a crush celebration.

POLLARD: I think they can expect to experience a number of different types of wines, that’s the beauty of what we have to offer because we can grow more that 25 different types of grapes which really then affords the winemaker this wonderful palette to draw from of different kinds of wines to blend or to make vineyard designate wines.

Most wineries also offer music or art to go along with the wine but it really is about tasting many different kinds of wines.

POLLARD: They can also do a really great sampling and then decide for themselves because it’s ultimately about a personal taste and one wine may taste good to one consumer and another consumer may have a totally different preference. The good news about Washington wines is the high quality at a really great value.

The industry has grown almost exponentially over the past year and where we recently reported surpassing the 600th winery, that number is now in the 675 region with 700 not far off. Pollard has some final words of advice for first time wine festival goers.

POLLARD: Get out there and experience the thrill of the harvest, see it in action and taste some great wines at the same time.
