Over Stepping the Bounds

Over Stepping the Bounds

Overstepping the Bounds. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

I sometimes think that the sports world would have been better off without instant replay. But that at least makes things fairly cut and dried unlike the political world where shades of gray are everywhere. Take a recent inspection of some tree fruit operations in Okanagan County. Dan Fazio, Washington Farm Bureau says one team has really been stepping out of bounds.

FAZIO: DOL inspectors started inspecting in late June up in Okanagan County and they were focusing on orchardists looking at wage and hour laws, housing, a whole number of things. Farmers up there are not too happy about it.

Not just about being inspected but according to Fazio the inspectors went beyond their authority.

FAZIO: They are alleging that the inspectors who came up there were first of all didn’t ask permission, just stormed onto their property without any kind of permission – without any kind of search warrant. Second that the inspectors were making inaccurate statements trying to talk their way on to the property. Then they were inspecting things they didn’t have jurisdiction to inspect.

Some permanent housing was inspected as if it was temporary housing.

FAZIO: And lastly which is really very, very disheartening is there’s allegations from the farmers that they have inspected certain groups differently than others. So there is a racial component that the farmers are alleging and we need to get to the bottom of that because it’s very, very disconcerting.

A meeting was held last evening in Okanagan County with political leaders and Farm Bureau members to try and sort thing out.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
