Organic field days; EQIP reminder

Organic field days; EQIP reminder

Washington Ag Today July 2009 You can discover the latest research and hands-on teaching methods being tested at Washington State University’s Organic Farm in Pullman at a field day scheduled for this Thursday, July 30th. The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The farm operates a 105-member fruit and vegetable Community Supported Agriculture program, selling to the local community. The WSU Organic Farm is located in the Tukey Horticultural Orchard.

Coming up August 3rd is WSU’s Puyallup Organic Farm Walk and Field Day at the Puyallup Research and Extension Center. That is from one to four p.m.

Current research on a variety of organic farming topics and on the use of riparian buffers will be presented.

A reminder that you still have until August 14th to sign for 2010 funding for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program or EQIP. Dave Brown, Assistant State Conservationist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, says one reason the sign up for the ranking cut-off was extended from July 15th was the delay in getting final program information out due to the new farm bill. Also

Brown: “One, with the new farm bill coming out last year it was just some delay in getting final program information available, and with our EQIP program we allow our local working groups in each of ten teams to develop the 2010 EQIP priorities and we wanted to give them just a little bit more time to get those priorities developed, and also make sure we have enough time for interested participants to see what those priorities are and decided whether or not they want to apply.” 26

Again the ranking cut-off date for 2010 funding is August 14th.
