Seems Susan and I are always reminded by friends that don’t ride how dangerous horses are. Now they mean well but how do horse related injuries compare to football, or bike riding? I’m Jeff Keane, Stay tuned because after the break we will be back with some statistics. Now considering the fact that over forty thousand   high school football players will receive concussions this year or that just under two people every day are killed bike riding, horseback riding seems pretty   tame. Susan what are the most common injuries related   to horses?  Jeff, interestingly more injuries, and deaths to humans from horses occurred working with the animals on the ground. Out of over 2 million horse owners, last year around seventy-eight thousand injuries were reported to NIESS or the Nation Injury Information Clearing House. Fractures were the most common at twenty –eight percent, with sprains and strains at fourteen percent, and concussions just under five .Susan this same study reported that 86 percent of patients were treated and released and 8.7 % were hospitalized while sadly,  point one percent arrived at the hospital deceased. With those low figures I’ll pick a horse over a bike any day!  Dito that Jeff!  Even if you count  rodeo wrecks the majority of injuries, (sixty percent) happen at home or on the farm while just under thirty percent occurred at events. Skimming the NEISS list of  injuries; fractions, concussions, abrasion and  dislocations I will tell you my boys  contributed their share to last years stats. I’m Susan Allen
