Washington fries prized at national restaurant show
Farm and Ranch May 29, 2009 Washington potatoes were again showcased for tens of thousands of restaurant and hospitality operators who gathered recently in Chicago from all fifty states and around the world. The event was the 90th anniversary of the National Restaurant Association Restaurant, Hotel-Motel Show.
Matt Harris, Director of Trade for the Washington State Potato Commission was there.
Harris: “The program itself is by far one of the nation’s largest restaurant association programs, which brings in an educational piece along with a trade show piece. So for the four days we were in Chicago, we were talking to large QSRs, medium and small QSRs, about Washington state products. So frozen French fries, dehydrated potatoes and fresh potatoes that are produced in our state.”
Harris along with Potato Commissioners Nelson Cox, Frank Martinez and Phil Schoening served up fries at the commission’ booth.
Harris: “This year I think we hit almost 900-pounds of French fries distributed, which is a great feeling to have people come by and always appreciate the products from Washington state. Especially our French fries.”
Harris says show numbers were down due to the economic recession but those participating seemed more committed than ever.
