FSA Staffing Concerns

From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. The potential closing of Farm Service Agency offices is a big concern for farmers because of the essential services they provide.

Those concerns were brought up at a recent farmer listening session in Prosser with House Ag Chair GT Thompson, state FSA Executive Director Jon Wyss, and U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse …

NEWHOUSE … “I have heard those concerns. There are some challenges certainly with the number of personnel throughout federal agencies because of some of the cost-cutting measures that have been taken, efficiency measures. And so, agencies are working through that.”

But Newhouse says they will keep an eye on the situation …

NEWHOUSE … “We’re monitoring that closely to make sure that FSA and other agencies can respond to the workloads that are required, that when people need those services, I want to make sure that they get the help and assistance that they’re looking for.”

Bottom line, Newhouse says he’s opposed to closing FSA offices …

NEWHOUSE … “I do believe that we need to make sure that we have access for our producers, that it’s convenient or them to visit the FSA office in their region without putting an undue burden on their traveling back and forth.”

Local Farm Service Agency offices provide services like loan processing, disaster assistance, and technical guidance, that are crucial for their livelihoods.

Recent statements from the USDA have indicated no plans to

close any FSA offices.
