07/15/08 Traffic Safety

With the ever rising gas prices more and more people are turning to alternative methods of transportation, the bicycle being one of the more popular and obvious choices. But as we pull out and dust off the old bicycle we in turn need to take a refresher course on bicycle safety. Riding a bike now days without a helmet is irresponsible, rather like riding in a car without a seatbelt. Cyclists also need to adhere to the rules of the road; and while many motorists drive like they own the road, cyclists who run stop signs and lights, ride on the wrong side of the road and cut through and around regular traffic put themselves in jeopardy. In the same vain, new and experienced motorists need to prove that they know how and are willing to share the road by driving in a way that recognizes and ensures cyclist and pedestrian rights and safety. All in all, many cities are going to find that they need to rethink their traffic infrastructure, making it more accommodating and safe for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists to share the roadways.
