04/28/08 Farm safety day

In southern Idaho the irrigation canals and ditches are filling and its time to remind youngsters as well about the dangers that surround those waters. In Nez Perce County on May 10th kids and adults too, can learn more about water safety and safety on the farm. As has been the case in the past Shari Kuther says they have plenty of safety issues to introduce to the kids during the daylong session at the Nez Perce School. KUTHER "We're going to talk about ATV and helmet safety, also going to talk about stranger danger. A new one that we're going to do is some meth awareness, PTO's of course we'll talk about again and chains, sprockets, pullies. We'll have a fire safety demonstration." Kuther says their safety demonstrations are reminders to man of the kids and their parents of the safety issues they already know, and maybe take for granted. ATV use is one example. KUTHER "A lot of times people just think 'oh I'm just going around the farm or I'm just using it out in the field, it's not a big deal, I don't need a helmet.' And, nobody plans it; nobody goes out and says I think I'm going to get hurt today." Five to twelve year old children are encouraged to show up on the 10th at 8am. Its five dollars per child, ten bucks per family for the safety sessions, with lunch, snacks, a t-shirt and a goodie bag. Voice of Idaho Agriculture Bill Scott
