Pink for Valentines. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.
Valentine's Day is this Thursday. This is just a warning. Don't forget! There are a lot of different sweet ideas for your someone special including something a bit different according to Alan Taylor, spokesman for Pink Lady America.
TAYLOR: We're trying to persuade people to maybe go a little lighter on the candies and flowers and give something that's more healthy and of course we think the Pink Lady apple really fills the bill as far as something that's a little more healthy than candy or the flowers that may wilt within a few hours so we're trying to do something a little different for Valentine's Day.
They are promoting the Pink Lady with POP pieces.
TAYLOR: We've produced a couple of point of sale pieces, one that's a price card and one that's a poster which has Cupid on it and our own flowing heart logo which is a symbol for Pink Lady apples.
So what can you expect when you bite into a Pink Lady?
TAYLOR: Well first of all I like to compare the Pink lady to Gala. When you bite into Gala you get this great little burst of flavor but with Pink Lady it's a great little burst of flavor that lasts for quite a long time. And then I've seen people compare it to Granny Smith and I looked at Granny Smith which is a really good apple and cooking apple as something that could be referred to as tart green but I think a Pink Lady as sweet tart ripe.
