10/08/07 Seeking solutions at alfalfa meeting

Its dubbed "Peaceful Coexistence; Creating a strategy for harmony among GM, organic and conventional alfalfa producers." That meeting in Denver this Wednesday is sponsored by the National Alfalfa and Forage Alliance. John Dockter is the associate director of the alliance which is bringing in experts within their own sectors, whether it is export markets, the production of alfalfa seed, alfalfa hay and organic production. He says they will be able to express their views and concerns on Roundup Ready alfalfa versus conventional alfalfa DOCKTER "We are going to try and take those areas of common ground and hopefully develop a plan that people can support and live with knowing that it is likely that at some point Roundup Ready alfalfa will be on the market and knowing that we do have markets overseas to protect for people who grow conventional varieties as well." Among the speakers is Greg Lowry, executive vice president of the Idaho Crop Improvement Association. DOCKTER "We've got some growers who grow conventional and Roundup Ready alfalfa who can speak to how they are dealing with the growth of both alfalfas on one farm."
