06/13/07 Weed science field days

Strategies for controlling Italian ryegrass in winter wheat with herbicides will be among the topics covered during the annual University of Idaho Weed Science Tour tomorrow. In addition to Italian ryegrass control, other tour stops will focus on strategies to combat sweetbriar rose, scentless chamomile and broadleaf weeds, plus a stop to see weed control using mustard seed meal in organically produced carrots. A second weed science tour is set for June 20th at Kimberly. U of I hosts will show visitors weed management trials in sugarbeets, corn, small grains and potatoes. For Roundup Ready® sugarbeets, visitors will learn about application timing and tank mixes with Roundup Original Max, critical periods for weed control, weed control with generic glyphosate and other soil-applied herbicides, kind of a what to do and not to do with glyphosate. Small grains growers will be interested in comparisons of spring wheat varieties' tolerance to a wild oat herbicide, the effectiveness of new and currently registered broadleaf herbicides in spring wheat, the impact of barley seed size and seeding rate on the ability of malt barley to compete with broadleaf weeds in organic production systems, wheat's response to and recovery from the effects of glyphosate drift. And this is just the start of dozens of field days coming up through out the summer and into early fall. Today's Idaho Ag News Bill Scott
