Expanding Beef Recall & Bush Talks Immigration plus Food Forethought. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.
California-based United Food Group has expanded their recall of thousands of pounds of beef because it might be contaminated with the E. Coli bacteria. . The company is now recalling about 5.7 million pounds of fresh and frozen meat that has been sold in 11 western states through Albertson's and other grocery stores. United Food Group Spokesman Lyle Orwig says this is a voluntary recall.
ORWIG: The reason for the additional recall was basically because every time more information was provided to us by USDA and the state of California and the state of Arizona, we acted immediately. They gave us the information and we say okay, this is the production date and then we get new information additional information from other consumers and we acted immediately basically in the best interest of public health by recalling what could have been suspected product.
As long as the meat is cooked properly to 160 degrees, the bacteria poses no threat.
President Bush used his Saturday radio address to talk members of Congress about his comprehensive immigration reform.
BUSH: I understand the skepticism some members of Congress have regarding certain aspects of this legislation. Like any legislation, this bill is not perfect and like many Senators, I believe the bill will need to be further improved along the way before it becomes law.
Bush directly addressed questions that many congress members had voiced.
Now with today's Food Forethought, here's Susan Allen.
The lovely Rachel Smith was crowned Miss Universe recently amid loud boo's in Mexico City. Miss Smith, who says she won't be returning to Mexico anytime soon, was subjected to prejudice on her visit to the country not because she is bi-racial but because she is happens to be an American . While the flood of illegal immigrants continues to deplete our health, schools and social services, while we freely hand out benefits to aliens who refuse to learn our language, our neighbors to the South obviously can't stand us. Imagine for a moment the global outcry if Americans treated a Mexican beauty contestant visiting the US with such disrespect! This is nothing new, in 1993 Mexicans booed an earlier Miss. USA, three years ago, they degraded our US soccer team . Donald Trump who happens to own the Miss. Universe pageant remarked to a New York Times reporter that he was nervous the audience would storm the stage calling the level of hostility toward our country "amazing'. I call it "amazing" that we benignly continue to harbor people this hostile towards our country.
Thanks Susan. That's today's Northwest Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
