Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran and today I am answering an email question. A listener writes "We have been attending wine tastings that seem to be on the serious side and I feel intimidated. Could you give me a few pointers so that I don't look foolish?" Those who enjoy wine will often gather to further educate their palates, keeping up to date with the new releases, what is happening in the wine world and just to have some fun. Your first clue that you are at a serious wine tasting is when there is more wine than food, and most of the food is in the form of dry rather tasteless crackers. Or - when the glasses are thin and light and just feel expensive. As I said, these people are all there to learn something, so leave your inferiority complex at home. However, I can give you a few basics that might help you to feel initially more comfortable. Respecting the fact that wine is a great deal about fragrance and most serious tasters have a sensitive nose, so to speak, don't wear perfume or aftershave to the event. If you smoke, don't smoke before or during the event. For your own benefit don't eat spicy or strongly flavored foods the day of your tasting. The lingering effects could influence your perception of the wine in a less than positive manner. And since you are new at this - refrain from voicing your opinions out loud try listening and learning from others comments. If you have questions - ask. Navigating a serious wine tasting need not be intimidating, simply enjoy the tasting and getting to know some new wines. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at Vine to wine dot net, and thanks for joining me on today's Vine to Wine.
