04/23/07 Some winter wheat quality scores for 07

Farm and Ranch April 23, 2007 The Washington Wheat Commission in conjunction with the Western Wheat Quality Lab in Pullman, Washington have released the winter wheat quality scores for 2007. There is little change to existing varieties that have been listed in previous years. The Wheat Quality Lab has found that the quality of a variety changes little over time. Wheat Commission vice president Glen Squires says there are some new soft white winters on the list this year. Squires: "There are three varieties. Concept is a new variety that now has three years of data. It came in with a quality rating of Q. That Q represents a variety that maintains the quality of PNW wheat. George is also a new variety that is on the list. It also has a ranking of Q. Rjames is another soft white winter new on the list with three years of data and it likewise has .a ranking of Q." A new club wheat on the list is Cara with a Q+ quality rating meaning it would improve the overall quality of Pacific Northwest Wheat. Squires has the scores for hard red winter wheat. Squires: "One is Eddy and its quality ranking was a Q+. Bauermeister and Declo are two others and they both have a quality ranking of a Q-." A Q- means the variety does not enhance the quality of PNW wheat. That's the rating for two hard white winter wheats added to the list, Palamino and MDM.
