03/19/07 Wine In Mexico

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran and I just got back from vacationing in Mexico. I was all over the place from Guadalajara to Todos Santos on the Baja. Normally I leave behind the pursuit of wine and adopt myself to Margaritas and beer. This time I was with a friend determined to drink wine. Okay so you may not think good wine in Mexico and most of the time you are right. You probably try to order wines from the United States or Chile or Argentina and you are often disappointed. Well I sure was because most every wine we ordered was baked. Meaning the wine had spent a little too much time in the heat and it was truly cooked. My theory is this happened in transit and the restaurant owners although many had taken great pains to have good wine storage facilities didn't recognize that it wasn't their fault. So just when I was about to give it up, we dined in a restaurant in San Jose del Cabo and had a truly beautiful wine made in Mexico. It was a Syrah blend of some sort and it knocked us all out. We began seeking out and asking for recommendations of Mexican wines and I discovered tow producers worth seeking out when you next vacation down south they are Casa de Piedra try their red Vinos de Piedra a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo. Also look for wines from Chateau Camou, it is a small boutique winery well worth trying. The upscale restaurants are sure to carry it. So I guess when in Mexico drink Mexican wine and thanks for joining me on today's Vine to Wine.
