03/05/07 Farm Safety Week

The goal of Farm Safety Week is to educate everyone about the dangers that can be found on a farm or ranch. American Farm Bureau's Mike Deering knows all too well that the farm can be a dangerous place especially if taken for granted. DEERING "I know a man who was a great rancher that was caught off guard. The mistake made was the result of bad weather and poor decision making; driving over a muddy dam without fully evaluating the hazards. The man left behind a wife and two kids. The man is my father. After you've seen you mentor, your best friend, your Dad pinned lifeless under a tractor at a young age believe me your perspective, passion and awareness changes dramatically." Most farming accidents or fatalities involve farm machinery. Family members and migrant workers are exposed to an array of potential hazards from chemicals to toxic fumes, from electricity to wells, from ponds to livestock handling. You can do that by increased awareness, having plans in case of emergency situations, inspect and keep equipment in proper working condition, read and follow label instructions and discuss safety with farm employees. Most important, don't just practice farm safety this week, do it every minute of every day. Voice of Idaho Agriculture Bill Scott
