10/30/06 Holiday Wine

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran and today we are answering questions from the email. A listener wrote to ask "With the holidays upon us can you recommend some wines to take for a Thanksgiving weekend long celebration?" Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Of course it has mostly to do with family and secondly with my love of food and wine. When you are selecting wines for the Thanksgiving weekend, I don't necessarily recommend big wines with the big meal. They can get lost and not be appreciated. So maybe the best time to serve them is on Saturday night after Thanksgiving when you are tired of Turkey and ready for something else. Have a meal that is designed around your best wines to showcase them there. If your guests are arriving Wednesday night plan on a simple soup and salad night. We love making a sandwich bar and having grills ready for folks to grill their sandwiches to accompany a nice pot of soup. This is a time when basic white Sauvignon Blanc and red wine blends are the ticket. Keep it simple. One wine that I do like to recommend is a low alcohol pear cider to serve at just about anytime during the weekend especially with turkey sandwiches on Friday or Saturday. If you have a Sunday brunch it is delicious as an alternative to sparkling wine based drinks. Whatever you do pay attention to the fact that your wine selections should all have good acid so that they go well with food. To me this time the food is center stage and the wine is a supporting act. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thank you for joining me on today's Vine to Wine.
