The 2026 School Nutrition Snapshot
School food programs sit right at the intersection of nutrition science, policy, and student health. Alyssa McClelland with Dairy Council of California says these programs play an important role in supporting student well-being, academics, and daily nutrition needs.For more than 40 years, the organization’s Trends program has tracked changes and turned them into practical insights to help schools and industry adapt.
Here is a quick look at four key trends for 2026.
First, protein demand is rising, with 70 percent of Americans actively seeking protein-rich foods.
Second, ultra-processed foods are under the spotlight, as more than half of daily calories in the United States come from these foods, with youth consuming even more.
Third, a children’s health crisis is driving national attention, with increasing rates of prediabetes, obesity, and mental health concerns.
And fourth, nutrition is becoming part of health care, with Food Is Medicine approaches improving diet quality and food security.
