California’s race for governor is sharpening its focus on agriculture, with candidates from both parties pledging to ease regulations they say are hurting farmers.

At a recent forum hosted by the California Farm Bureau, six gubernatorial candidates largely agreed that state rules have increased costs and strained rural communities. According to reporting from California Farm Bureau Ag Alert, several candidates pointed to rising compliance costs, including a study showing lettuce growers’ regulatory expenses climbed more than 1,300 percent between 2006 and 2024.

While there was consensus on the challenges, solutions varied. Republican candidate Chad Bianco called for sweeping cuts to regulations and taxes, while Democrat Matt Mahan proposed balancing economic needs with environmental protections. Candidates also debated water policy, including the future of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, which could force significant farmland out of production in the coming years.

With the June primary approaching, the forum highlighted agriculture’s growing role in the campaign, as candidates seek support from rural voters and farming communities across California.
