A change in title, but a celebration of the agricultural workforce just the same. Today is officially Farmworkers Day in the state of California.

The move highlights the ongoing importance of the farmworkers’ movement. California recognizes it as a transformative force for civil rights that remains highly relevant today.

Just last week, the California State Senate unanimously approved a bill establishing Farmworkers Day as a new statewide holiday. The measure passed with a 37 to 0 vote, with no objections from the senate floor.

The holiday will now be observed each year on March 31. It follows years of a similar observance known as César Chávez Day, which focused on one of the movement’s most recognizable figures, who now faces recent accusations of sexual abuse.

Supporters of the change say this new approach broadens the spotlight. It shifts the focus away from any one individual and onto the people in the fields, past and present, whose work keeps food on our tables.

It is a reminder that behind every harvest is a workforce whose impact reaches far beyond the fields.
