From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson with today’s Fruit Grower Report. Washington apples are the state’s most well-known crop, but that doesn’t give them immunity from today’s challenges in agriculture.

Michael Schadler, President of the Washington Apple Commission, was at the recent WSTFA Annual Meeting in Wenatchee commiserating and celebrating with growers …

SCHADLER … “You know, it’s going good. You said “commiseration” and I think that’s right. I think the theme of this conference is perseverance, but hey, it’s packed and I think most people recognize that there’s a bright future for this industry. We’ve just got to get through this cycle and the trough on the bottom here a little bit and then come out stronger moving forward.”

And Schadler was able to share one of his ideas when he got up and spoke to those in attendance …

SCHADLER … “One of the themes I talked about in my presentation was kind of a renascence of the Washington Apple brand and the Washington Apple logo and getting more of our shippers to actually use that, not exclusively, but as part of their own brand.”

The more consumers get to see that Washington Apple logo, Schadler says the better it is for us all …

SCHADLER … “You know, embed that Washington logo on your fruit sticker. Use your own brand but also use Washington because that’s what we’re out there marketing around the world. We’re focused on export markets and that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to sell Washington. Washington is world-renowned, but if we don’t use that logo and that name on our sticker it will lose relevance with the

consumer internationally.”

Again, that is Washington Apple Commission president, Michael Schadler.
