US Cattle Inventories 2% Lower Than 2024

“Inventory levels are getting tighter, 2% lower than a year ago. That's mainly the result of relatively tight cattle supplies that we have in the United States. It's also been particularly exacerbated by the lack of cattle imports coming in from Mexico. Currently are not allowed to be imported from Mexico due to concerns about the new world screw room cases that have occurred in Mexico over the past year or so, and that shows up in the cattle and feeder report with particularly tight supplies in the southern feeding regions, particularly places like Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado.”
Further details from the report include,
“According to the December cattle on feed report for feedlots that have a capacity of more than 1000 head, there was 11.7 3 million head of cattle in feedlots, that's 2% lower than a year ago during the month of November. 1.60 million head of cattle were placed into those feedlots, which is 11% lower than a year ago. And 1.5 2 million head were marketed during the month of November. That's 12% lower than a year ago. However, taking into account the one fewer slaughter day that we had this year compared to last, percentage is close to about 7% lower than a year ago.”
Once again, that was Michael McConnell, USA livestock analyst, going over the December cattle on feed report that just recently came out. That is today's Line on Agriculture report. I'm Lorrie Boyer, wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas.
