Short Corn Benefits

As short corn continues to grow in popularity. Lindsay Battle- Bayer, North American press, sea on strategy and launch lead, explains how short-stature corn can benefit growers.

“First one being standability. So really, with the shorter stature and then we actually have, like, some slightly larger stalks, it's really helping that corn stay standing in the field despite weather conditions, high winds, and even allows you to plant at higher densities and still have that standability. The other benefit of the system itself is the access piece. Because of that, shorter stature growers can get into the field later in the season. So when you have a year like this one with heavy disease pressure, really can see that advantage, because you can spray later, and aerial applications are always an option. But you know, those are resource intensive, and you may not be able to get it out there when you need it. So if you can get out there and make that spray when you need to, it can be a huge advantage for a grower. All of that's going to lead to higher yield potential.”

And then there is the systems component,

“Field view, which really partners really nicely with our tool that help growers really figure out what's the right density to plant that for their acre, as well as giving them insights throughout the season on improved practices.”

In addition, Battle says that they have done extensive testing on weed control due to the corn stands being closer to the ground, and those tests have shown no difference when compared to traditional corn stand height.
