With so many data management tools available today, one challenge farmers face is simply figuring out how those tools fit into their operation. What makes sense for one farm may be completely unrealistic for another. Todd Kirwan says understanding your operation is key to finding the right solution.

Kirwan… “ Definitely find something that works for your organization. If your organization is on the bleeding edge, or if your organization is a very late adopter, understand that and then start to implement based on that. Don't go out and say we're kind of the people that wait and see whether the technology works and jump on something that is brand new because you're just gonna burn that bridge. Then over and over management will point to, well, we tried that two years ago and you failed, so we're not doing anything new. Definitely understand your organization, understand how to implement it, and be flexible. You've gotta implement it to your organization. So don't take a piece of software or drones and spread it out over 10 different counties and think, okay, I am gonna buy a couple of drones and get across everything and look at images every week. Just understand what the capabilities actually are and the time that that will take.”

With more than 25 years in large-scale farming, Kirwan has dedicated his career to connecting field work with overall financial strategy.
