Winter Weather Wetter

From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. With La Nina now firmly in place, our upcoming winter months should be a bit cooler and a bit wetter than average.

That’s the world from University of Washington professor Cliff Mass, who says the drought in Easter Washington should be getting better …

MASS … “So, the Yakima reservoirs are actually going up now relatively quickly, you know, so there’s not an issue there. The streams flows will be coming up for the Yakima drainage, but the reservoirs that feed it are already going up fairly rapidly, so there’s no reason to be pessimistic.”

So, the drought, Mass says is unlikely to continue, for now …

MASS … “I mean it could happen, but these kinds of situations are generally associated with wet, cool situation and good snowpack in the mountains.”

But Spring weather, Mass says is too far off to predict …

MASS … “I mean there’s no reason to think that will be unusual. I mean it’s going to be a neutral spring, neither La Nina nor El Nino. So, at this point I can’t really say much about that.”

So, as winters go, should we expect “normal” …

MASS … “Right, normal in the sense that this is a La Nina year and will tend to be moist and it will be probably kind of stormy, a good number of atmospheric rivers. So, it should be fine.”

Mass says near-term, the weather looks like it will be pretty cool and fairly wet.
