USPS for Alcohol

From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. It’s called the USPS Shipping Equity Act and it would allow the U.S. Postal Service to ship alcoholic beverages to consumers.

U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse was one of the bill sponsors and says it’s worth trying again …

NEWHOUSE … “This is a reintroduction of legislation that I’ve supported in the past. It gives small businesses additional options for them to be able to get their product to customers.”

And the Post Office, Newhouse says has proven they’re more than capable …

NEWHOUSE … “The thing about the Postal Service is they actually, you know, they show up every single day. That makes them more accessible to a lot of our rural producers throughout Central Washington, but also around the country.”

And that, Newhouse says would be another option for our wineries and small craft breweries …

NEWHOUSE … “I think it’s just a matter of allowing small businesses, whether they’re in urban areas or rural areas, to have as much access to their potential marketplace and their customers as possible. And the Postal Services has proven that they can accomplish this task as efficiently and cost effectively as the other carriers.”

Newhouse says is not easy …

NEWHOUSE … “Shelf space in grocery stores is really hard to get for some of these small producers. And so, I want to make sur that they have every available option to them to reach their customers and potential customers.”

This prohibition-era restriction on the Postal Service is unnecessary.
