According to a news release from the Center for Environment and Welfare (CEW), the organization has launched a new campaign urging Congress to address the impacts of California's Proposition 12, which the CEW claims is driving up grocery prices nationwide. The campaign, called “Food Price Fix,” includes a website, an educational video, and a letter-writing initiative asking voters to contact lawmakers in support of a federal solution.

The CEW argues that Proposition 12, which restricts the sale of eggs and pork in California to specialty, higher-cost products, has led to higher prices for consumers across the U.S. For example, they contend the national egg prices have increased by 103 percent since the law's implementation in 2022, with even steeper increases in California. Producers nationwide have also had to make costly adjustments to comply with California’s standards, raising costs for consumers.

The CEW campaign aims to generate grassroots support for a federal fix to address what it calls the “inflationary” effects of Proposition 12. The release notes that both Democratic and Republican leaders have expressed concerns about the law’s impact.

According to their website, the Center for Environment and Welfare was founded to help consumers, companies, and stakeholders navigate issues related to sustainability and animal welfare.
