With the March 17 deadline here for farmers to purchase crop insurance for spring seeded crops, National Crop Insurance Services, or NCIS, released results of a near-record year in 2024. Tom Zacharias, president of NCIS, summarizes the 2024 numbers.

In addition to growth in acreage, NCIS said farmers are buying more policies today than ever, leading to additional liability protection throughout rural America.

That additional protection came in handy in a year that had several extreme weather events.

NCIS hopes the growing popularity of crop insurance, and the speed that indemnities were delivered last year, will lead to even more farmers purchasing coverage for 2025.
