Key Nominees for Ag Pt 1
From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. Changes made during the election will soon be in place, in the Oval Office and in his cabinet.Pam Lewison, Ag Director at the Washington Policy Center, says a nominee she’ll be watching closely is Brooke Rollins for Ag Secretary, a bit of a surprise selection …
LEWISON … “I don’t necessarily know a ton about her. I do think that she will, you know, champion, hopefully, she should champion anyway, the general farm way of life and farm businesses.”
A less obvious issue, Lewison says will be our Northwest forests …
LEWISON … “Because the U.S. Forest Service is under the purview of the USDA, you would hope, in that same vein, you would hope that she would be a champion for better forest management and cleaning up our forests in general and more active management.”
And the bigger issues like tariffs won’t be easy either …
LEWISON … “But I think tariffs and trade will be a little bit sticky. We’ve not really seen a whole lot from her about that and that is certainly an active part of USDA policy as well.”
So, Lewison says we’ll be watching closely …
LEWISON … “I think everybody’s kind of curious. It seems out of the blue. It’s one of those things where there’s a lot of question marks, but I don’t necessarily think that that’s a bad thing.”
Tune in tomorrow for another nominee on Lewison’s watch list.
