National Milk Producers Federation expects a USDA federal milk marketing order decision by the end of 2024 this is an issue that National Milk has been working on for almost three years now. Chris Galen, Senior Vice President of member services and governance.

“Now they're about to issue a final decision, and we expect that any day now, we're hoping that the results of the election, or the whole election process isn't going to gum up the works and delay that process. What will hopefully happen here before the end of the year is USDA will come up with a final decision. We'll have a chance to look at it, but then ultimately it goes to farmers and co-ops across the country in all the federal order regions, and it will then be either voted in, or farmers will vote out the system, and then they'll go to an unregulated pricing system. The election or the vote will probably not occur until mid-winter, perhaps January, February of next year. But we do expect the decision to be announced here before the end of the year."

Chris Galen with the National Milk Producers Federation says the Federal Milk Marketing Order System was established in the 1930s to stabilize milk prices and ensure a steady supply of milk to consumers. The program establishes certain provisions under which dairy processors purchase fresh milk from dairy farmers supplying a marketing area.
