SNAP Fight Still Expected in 2025 Farm Bill
With the election over and the GOP winning Senate control, one Republican senator expects a farm bill to come easier in 2025 but still predicts a big fight over Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamp, spending versus that for farm supports.Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley …
“I would expect it’ll be easier to get a farm bill, but we’ll still have a terrible fight with Democrats giving up any money on food stamps.”
It will take a compromise to get the 60-vote Senate super-majority needed to pass a farm bill, which will take reaching across the aisle, something Grassley says has so far eluded Republicans and Democrats…
“They don’t agree with us Republicans that say that the actions that Vilsack took during the pandemic to increase by, over the next ten years, an average of 24 billion dollars more on food stamps, that that shouldn’t snap back to pre-pandemic levels.”
As for a farm bill this year…
“I don’t see how you get it done, particularly when we have to do the defense authorization bill and all 12 appropriation bills.”
Farm bills usually take weeks or months to pass both chambers, and Grassley says he’s heard of no movement at either the Ag staff level or between House and Senate chairs.
