Cargill is a giant in the animal protein industry. Hans Kabat, President for Cargill Protein North America…

“If you think about the 90,000,000 that we feed every day, that’s about 600 trucks of protein every day. If you were to drive through the line of those semis, it’d be seven miles long.”

Hans was a speaker at the recent Kansas City Ag Issues Forum. I took part in the day of discussion as he made sure to also mention what Cargill is doing when it comes to alternative, or “alt,” protein…

“We’re present in the alt protein business. It is just a much, much smaller scale for us than the animal protein business. We believe that is going to continue to be the weighting for the next several years. We also want to give consumers what they want to eat, so yes, we are going to be involved in the alternative protein space. In some ways we’re still figuring it out because it really has levelled off and in some ways is starting to drop some.”

He says they think the space will be there and that Cargill wants to be nonjudgmental about meeting that consumer need. In the meantime, he says they’re going to focus on the ninety million that really are the core of their business.
