Jenkins bear hunt

Caught up with Mike Jenkins of Upfront Outfitters out in the field on a bear hunt. It's pretty hot weather. It's been a little slow, but we've had opportunity. We shot at a bear last night at 250 yards and missed and had another bear at 180 yards night before and just couldn't get it together for a shot. A couple days left of the hunt and we're narrowing it down. Speaker1: And we're after black bears. Speaker2: Spring Black Bear in Oregon. It's all spot on stock. We can't use bait, can't use hounds spot and stock hunting for bear with some calling involved. Speaker1: When you say calling, is it calling like a challenge or is it calling like you've told me in the past? A weak animal, a weak baby. Speaker2: Calling cottontail rabbit in distress works great this time of the year. Fawn in Distress will be working real good here pretty soon. So anything like that can be extremely effective. It doesn't always work, but it can be extremely effective in the spring. Speaker1: And you say spring black bear, that's just a normal black bear in the spring. Speaker2: Most states require a drawing for spring bear or quite a few states. Oregon is one of those, but there is a set aside for non-residents so non-residents can get guaranteed tags when they apply for the draw in certain areas. And then we focus on those areas for non-residents, not necessarily wanting to sit over bait, but actually go spot and stock hunt. Speaker1: Interested up front outfitters.com.
