Sun Protection

From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. It’s that time of year again when farmers spend a lot of time in the sun during the growing season.

Devon Charlier (Shar-LEER), with the Upper Midwest

Agricultural Safety and Health Center, says in recent years, more farmers are considering the risks of skin cancer than in the past, and says protecting yourself starts with sunscreen …

CHARLIER … “We say wearing any kind of sunscreen can be really helpful. So, whatever you can get your hands on, whatever you'll use, we want you to use it to make it as effective as possible against overexposure to UV rays and prevent things like skin cancer, melanoma, etc. We recommend using something that is mineral-based, broad spectrum, with an SPF of 30 to 50.”

Charlier recommends farmers and everyone working outdoors in the sunshine follow their five “S” protection plan …

CHARLIER … “Slipping on a shirt covering your skin as much as possible. Slopping on that sunscreen plenty and often. And then, slapping on a hat. We do recommend a wide, fuller brim like a bucket hat. A lot of folks like those baseball hats, but that doesn't give you that back-of-the-neck and ear coverage that is so important. We also recommend you slide on those sunglasses to protect your eyes. And finally, seek shade whenever possible.”
