Moo-ve Over, Traditional Sports Drinks!
With your Southeast Regional Ag News, I am Haylie Shipp. This is the Ag Information Network. You just get done with the workout. You’re thirsty. Grab a glass of milk? Okay, not exactly, but today’s story is a little outside of the carton.
GoodSport is a dairy-based sports drink that is now launching in over 1,000 WalMart locations. Michelle McBride is the Founder and CEO…
“My first prototypes were milky. I was working with a flavor house that was trying to help me thin out the taste of skim milk, but it wasn’t working. I think one of the funniest comments I got from an athlete when I was doing some trials with it was, ‘it tastes good, but it sort of tastes like the milk after you’ve had a bowl of Fruity Pebbles.’ So, I thought, we’re not there yet. The Center for Dairy Research helped me learn to use ultra-filtration to remove the protein and harness all those great electrolytes, the right balance of carbohydrates and B-vitamins from milk to make a sports drink that’s clear, refreshing, and thirst-quenching.”
She gives a lot of credit to the dairy industry.
“So we’ve gotten tremendous support from the dairy industry. You know, we worked on the dairy application part of it at the Center for Dairy Research at the University of Wisconsin which is a dairy checkoff-supported research center. Without them, we would not be here today. WalMart would definitely not be a thing.”
That’s Michelle McBride, GoodSport Founder and CEO.
