From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson with today’s Fruit Grower Report. As summer arrives and the weather finally begins to warm up, you might be able to catch a hint of a grin on strawberry growers.

One of Washington state’s more established growers, The Strawberry Lady, Diana Biringer, of Biringer Farms, says the U-pickers are really liking the early varieties …

BIRINGER … “Well, I would say they’re pretty hardy for what they’ve gone through.”

And since they’re running a little latte, Biringer says the sunshine forecast is welcome …

BIRINGER … “Yeah, Mother Nature is bringing us the sun so that’ll do it. And, our customers this weekend, were thrilled with the berries. They picked two and three flats or more and the berries looked beautiful. Like I said, the early variety we’re picking now, but Mike was just in the office here and told us a week to two weeks, possibly, on some of those other varieties.”

Biringer says they’re used to starting much earlier …

BIRINGER … “We started June 9th last year so it was kind of a late year. Probably the first week in June would be average, but nothing is average anymore.”

The production numbers, Biringer says could be down a little …

BIRINGER … “I kind of “suspicion” that my husband’s thinking that. It’s so unpredictable.”
