Dairy Groups Call for Retaliatory Tariffs on Canada Part 2

American dairy groups are calling on the U.S. government to implement retaliatory tariffs on Canada over its dairy policies. The groups say our northern neighbor refuses to meet its signed treaty obligations under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement concerning dairy market access. Thank you for joining us again for part two, Senior Vice President for Trade Policy National Milk Producers Federation Shawna Morris is back on to chat with us more on this topic.

"Exports are fundamental to California's dairy farmers and the California dairy industry at large, and our focus here all along has been making sure that the access that was granted here is what we fully get… The best case that we want the U.S. government to be focused and fighting on is expanding new markets, launching new trade agreements. But you move forward by making sure that you solidify what you already have, and so I think in this case, our goal is to make sure that we get what we already thought we had here, so that California can make take full advantage of the opportunities that USMCA was supposed to deliver. And then move on to build further from there with additional markets as well.”

“But we continually see misguided messaging from the Canadian side that with the US is out to do. Here is, you know, destroy the Canadian Dairy sector, imposed reparable harm up there that living up to them. See a commitments would do nothing of this sort.”
