It’s time for your Farm of the Future Report. I’m Tim Hammerich.

Crops can’t talk to farmers about their needs, but with the right instrumentation, they can communicate. Phytech is a company that offers a plant-based irrigation software that senses when a plant needs water using dendrometers. Gilbert Rodriguez is an Account Manager at Phytech.

Rodriguez… “So we use irrigation sensors and we're able to track the contraction and expansion of the tree, and relay to the growers when their trees are in stress way before they would see the physical characteristics of the tree wilting and things like that. So with our dendrometer we're really able to have that visibility where never before we had. Now we're being proactive instead of reactive. It allows us to use water more efficiently and effectively. Now we can see how much water and when we need to irrigate. So with a platform that Phytech has provided, we're really able to see the whole farm on the app.”

Rodriguez said Phytech’s technology can work on a variety of crops, making it easy for farmers to know when to irrigate.

Rodriguez… “During the day of the tree contracts. At night, it fills back up. The leaves on the tree, the stomata, is closed during the night. So the tree fills back up at that point. So we're able to capture that your contraction expenditure throughout the day, week, month. And that's how we relay to the grower with our algorithm backup supporting us, lets the growers know in a very simple, easy color coding variance. Green means good, red means bad.”
