050206 GMO Grass

My husband broke his shoulder, my boys are off at college and there is nobody to mow the yard but Moi. Oh how I wish it didn't grow so fast. But thanks to advanced technology lawns in overdrive could soon be a thing of the past, help is coming and not in the form of a robotic lawn mower, (though that would be pretty cool) but through the genetic modification of grass. Researchers at Scott's Miracle-Gro are developing grass that grows extremely slow and is pest resistant and drought tolerate to boot. From an environmental standpoint this means less pollution from mowers, less pesticides for weeds, less fertilizers and the ability to conserve water. Yet there are still factions of the environmental community that fear new GMO grass strains could spread beyond lawns and golf courses, depleting native foliage and upsetting ecological balance. If the FDA approves GMO grasses it will be a financial coup for Miracle-Gro, and a bit of a set back for the lawn care industry dependant on mowing.
