04/11/06 Wine Glass

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran and today we You know we rely on our sense of smell most of all when we enjoy a glass of wine. And it may take you time to recognize that a wineglass is not just a wineglass. But that it is definitely going to influence how much you can enjoy of what a wine has to offer. Each glass shape will have different relationships between the fruit, acid, tannin and alcohol in the wine. In one style of glass you might notice the fruity quality of the grape, in another style glass, you may be overwhelmed by the acidity or the oak in that same wine. When you swirl the wine in a glass the wine will moisten the inside surface which increase the evaporation and the smells come forward. However, it does not allow the different qualities of aromas to blend together. It is for that reason that different attributes of the varietal grape will be more apparent in one style glass than in another. The shape of the glass will strongly influence what we smell. But let me caution you if you are drinking in big gulps and not really savoring the wine then the glass will not have much of an impact. When you swirl the wine in the glass and smell it gently and slowly you will notice much more about your wine. Chances are the wine will open and change as you drink it offering you all of its depth and nuance. Sometimes we don't fully enjoy a wine and we tend to blame it on the wine never, considering the glass could be at fault. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thanks for joining me on today's Vine to Wine.
